Star

For Armistice Day 1997

No shining star
no feldspar dawn
seven pointed, six or none.
Stay safe, there in the dark, man.
Don't look for the star
don't look
don't look for meaning
don't look for purpose
don't look for higher things.
Just stay there, safe there,
stay in the dark, man.
See the names.
See them
running round the wall.
This name
that name
how they all fall.
March
March with them
March with the names
March for them
March past
March under a foreign star
under a foreign sky
under foreign soil
lay
lay quiet
lay safe, lay quiet
lay quiet in the dark, man.
Don't look for the star.
