"Mid-way between Flaxpool and Upcott"

Mid-way between Flaxpool and Upcott
where three elms leap from a low hill into the sky
and the first line of thorn trees crest the Quantocks
my eyes turn outward, away from parting,
forward to another week. It is a lonely road.

The motor plays a quiet drone chant, set below
a plaintive scratch of hedgerows tracing
black inked needles over a moving page.
